SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Curtis J. Hieggelke, who passed on
4January 1, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was born to Harry and Glenna
6Hieggelke in Fargo, North Dakota on September 6, 1941; he
7graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and
8went on to earn a PhD in physics at the University of Nebraska,
9where he developed a lifelong passion for Cornhusker football;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was an early adopter of
12technology on both the personal and professional level; he
13co-founded the Illinois Macintosh Users Group (IMUG) in 1985,
14just a year after Apple launched its seminal personal computer;
15he conducted research that was funded by the National Science
16Foundation, which led to the development of a series of
17workshops and textbooks, dubbed nTIPERs (Newtonian Tasks
18Inspired by Physics Education Research), that taught thousands
19of physics teachers how to deploy emerging technology in the
20service of higher education; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke led a college workshop team of
22three that was honored by the American Physical Society in 2009

1for their innovative work in developing physics education in
2community colleges across the country; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was the author or co-author of
4six books; prior to his grant work, he ran the evening program
5at Joliet Junior College in addition to his work as a full-time
6faculty member; he was active in the teacher's union, serving
7as its president at one point, and in the American Association
8of Physics Teachers; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was selected for the Joliet
10Junior College Susan H. Wood Hall of Fame Award in 2012; this
11award capped off a forty-two-year career as a pioneering
12educator, including more than thirty years teaching at Joliet
13Junior College; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was preceded in death by his
15parents, Harry and Glenna Hieggelke; his infant son, Todd
16Hieggelke; and his younger brother, Dennis Hieggelke; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke is survived by his wife of 58
18years, Estelle (Hanson) Hieggelke, his sister, Judy (Manard)
19Smith; his sister-in-law, Dawn Hieggelke; his sons, Brian (Jan)
20Hieggelke, Brent Hieggelke, Jason (Tara) Hieggelke, and Justin
21Hieggelke; his grandchildren, Erica (Fievel) Hieggelke, Margot
22Hieggelke, Todd Hieggelke, Morgan Hieggelke, Greta Hieggelke,

1Coen Hieggelke, Soren Hieggelke, and Karin Hieggelke; and his
2great-grandchild, Otis Hieggelke; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
5Curtis J. Hieggelke and extend our sincere condolences to his
6family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
7further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Curtis Hieggelke as an expression of
10our deepest sympathy.
