SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Randy Crumpton of Chicago, who passed
4away on January 14, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Randy Crumpton was born in Chicago to Lander and
6Symathew Crumpton on April 16, 1965; he committed to his faith
7at an early age while attending the Fernwood United Methodist
8Church; he attended Van Vlissingen Elementary School and Percy
9L. Julian High School; he continued his formal education at
10Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he pledged
11the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and joined the fraternity's
12Epsilon Pi Collegiate Chapter in 1985; his interest in law
13school, politics, and election law was sparked when working
14with the late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington; he later
15graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago and
16received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa
17College of Law; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Immediately after law school, Randy Crumpton
19worked at Howse, Howse, Neville, and Gray, where he served as a
20law clerk to P. Scott Neville Jr.; after passing the bar exam,
21he began his law practice at the Law Offices of James Lourgos;
22he later started his own law firm and became a distinguished
23entertainment and election law attorney; he practiced in the

1areas of real estate, civil litigation, criminal law,
2evictions, probate, estate planning and copyright and also
3served as a court appointed attorney in the Child Protection
4Division of the Juvenile Court of Cook County; he was an expert
5on election law and argued and won Jackson v. Board of Election
6Commissioners before the Illinois Supreme Court; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In addition to his law practice, Randy Crumpton
8was prominent in the film and television industry and served as
9a board member of the Chicago International Film Festival; for
10over 20 years, he was the chairperson of its Black Perspectives
11Committee; he also served as an ambassador and contributor to
12the American Black Film Festival; he turned his admiration for
13filmmaking into a reality with his longtime friend, James
14Ramos; together, they formed Brave Face Productions and
15produced award-winning short films; he also co-produced Happy
16Birthday Langston Hughes - A Celebration in Poetry, Prose, and
17Song; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 2003, Randy Crumpton was appointed by the
19Governor to the Illinois Visual Media Task Force and was
20selected to attend the 2005 Sundance Institute's Independent
21Producer's Conference; he was instrumental in the dedication of
22a street to the late DJ Frankie Knuckles; in 2006, he became
23the director of MOVE! - The Chicago International House of
24Music Festival; in 2014, he co-founded and served as

1co-director of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation NFP; in 2016, he
2brought club owners, film producers, and entrepreneurs
3together to produce the film The Warehouse; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Randy Crumpton remained committed to his
5fraternity; for many years, he served as the Great Lakes
6Regional Legal Counsel, the chairperson of the Carnation Ball
7for the Upsilon Sigma Alumni Chapter, and was named chairperson
8for 2019; he was active in the Cook County Bar Association and
9served as editor of the newsletter; he was one of the founding
10members of the Guide Group, L.L.C, which published the Guide to
11Black Chicago and the Guide to Chicago's Black Lawyers; he
12served as a member of the Character and Fitness Committee of
13the Illinois Supreme Court; he was known for his creativity,
14commitment, passion, and sincere friendship; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Randy Crumpton was preceded in death by his
16parents and his brothers, Robert, Carl Lee, Billy, and Pete;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, Randy Crumpton is survived by his sister, Betty;
19his brothers, Corneal, Jerome, William, and Clarence; his
20nieces, Khadijah, Felicia, and Natasha; his nephews, Carl, Jr.,
21Treymaine, and Corneal Jr.; his godfather, Rev. Albert Sampson;
22his godmother, Jann Bennett Williams; his soror and cousin, Pam
23Clanton; his longtime fraternity brother and friend, Dr. Tim

1Jones; his godsons, Kendall Dunkin and Anthony, Akeem,
2Frederick, and Nicholas Jackson; his many great-nieces and
3great-nephews; his great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews;
4his loving cousins; and his many friends; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7Randy Crumpton and extend our sincere condolences to his
8family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
9further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Randy Crumpton as an expression of
12our deepest sympathy.
