SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Carl L. Matthews, of Ottawa, Chicago, and Glencoe, who passed away on June 26, 2010; and

WHEREAS, He was born on December 21, 1918, the eldest child of Carl and Hessie Matthews; he served his country proudly in the Air Corp in Europe during World War II; and

WHEREAS, After his time in World War II, he returned to Ottawa and met Marguerite Hughes, who would be his wife of 61 years; they were wed on August 6, 1949, settled in Chicago, and Carl began his career with Mutual Trust Life Insurance, an association which ended upon Carl's retirement 25 years ago; and

WHEREAS, Carl and Margy were devoted members of the Catholic faith and served as Co-Presidents of the Chicago Federation of the Christian Family Movement; and

WHEREAS, Carl Matthews devoted his second career as a volunteer with the Howard Area Community Center, where the annual "Volunteer of the Year" award is now named in his honor; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy; and

WHEREAS, Carl Matthews was the devoted father to Mark (Christi), Peggy (George) Kirk, and the late Nancy (Steve) Moore; and he was the proud grandfather to Kathryn, Christopher, Kaitlin, and Michael; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Carl Matthews; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Carl Matthews as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
