SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Purple Day is a global effort dedicated to promoting epilepsy awareness in countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, estimated to affect over 50 million people worldwide and over 3 million people in the United States; and

WHEREAS, More than 130,000 Illinoisans suffer from epilepsy; and

WHEREAS, One in ten persons will have at least one seizure during his or her lifetime; and

WHEREAS, The public is often unable to recognize common seizure types, or how to respond with appropriate first aid; and

WHEREAS, Purple Day will be celebrated on March 26 annually to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy throughout the country and the world; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate March 26, 2010, as "Purple Day" in the State of Illinois in an effort to raise awareness of epilepsy in the United States and Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Purple Day Organization with our support and respect.
