SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are deeply
3 concerned about the impact of unemployment on the citizens of
4 the State of Illinois; and
 
5     WHEREAS, There are over 15,000 Illinoisans whose
6 unemployment benefits ended on March 1, 2010 when the United
7 States Senate and United States House of Representatives did
8 not pass an extension; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The latest statistics from the United States
10 Department of Labor show that Illinois has an unemployment rate
11 of 11.1%; and
 
12     WHEREAS, During these tough economic times, qualified
13 people cannot find work because many businesses are not hiring
14 and the pool of candidates is too large; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Unemployment does not just effect the person who
16 has been laid off, but it affects families as well, forcing
17 them to not only exhaust their savings, but also forces them to
18 rely on credit to pay bills; and
 
19     WHEREAS, During this economic crisis, these extended
20 benefits have been the lifeline allowing people to continue to

1 feed their families and stay in their homes; and
 
2     WHEREAS, A filibuster by United States Senator Jim Bunning
3 (R-KY) is blocking a vote in the United States Senate that
4 would extend these benefits nationwide for people who have
5 exhausted their basic 26 weeks of coverage; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
7 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the United
8 States Congress to pass this extension for unemployment
9 benefits; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
11 delivered to the Speaker of the United States House of
12 Representatives and the Majority Leader of the United States
13 Senate.
