SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Centreville Police Lieutenant Gregory Jonas of Centreville, who was killed in the line of duty on June 2, 2009; and

WHEREAS, He was born in Centreville, formerly Fireworks Station, on June 12, 1949, to Roy Mathews and Vivian Whigham; he attended East St. Louis Senior High School from 1963 to 1967; after high school he attended Texas Tech University in Tyler, Texas from 1968 to 1972; and

WHEREAS, He joined the Alorton Police Department in 1976, where he worked for eight years; in 1995 Greg joined the Centreville Police Department; in 2004 he was promoted to the position of Lieutenant; he married Ms. Viola Madlock in 2003; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his sister, Elise Hughs; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Gregory Jonas leaves to cherish his memory, his dear and loving wife of six years, Viola Jonas; his loving mother, Ms. Vivian Whigham; his two sons, Jamal Jonas and Antonio McNamee; his four daughters, Kalidah (Juan) Jonas Carraway, Joni McNamee, Jessica McNamee, and Annette McNamee; his two special grandchildren, Tamondja Smith and Antonio Harris; his 10 beautiful grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends; his best friend, Sgt. Barry Foster; the Centreville police department; and the entire community of Centreville; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family, friends, and a grateful community, the passing of Centreville Police Lieutenant Gregory Jonas; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Centreville Police Lieutenant Gregory Jonas as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
