SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On May 26, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated
3 Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
4 Second Circuit to serve as a Justice of the United States
5 Supreme Court; and
 
6     WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has demonstrated excellent
7 vision in nominating a Hispanic with such deep experience to
8 the United States Supreme Court; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Judge Sotomayor's upbringing serves as an
10 inspiration to all, with a life story that includes being
11 raised by a single mother from Puerto Rico in public housing in
12 Bronx, New York; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Judge Sotomayor attended Princeton University and
14 graduated summa cum laude; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Judge Sotomayor graduated from Yale Law School,
16 where she served as editor of the Yale Law Journal; and
 
17     WHEREAS, In 1978, Judge Sotomayor served as Assistant
18 District Attorney in New York, fearlessly and effectively
19 prosecuting dozens of criminal cases; and

1     WHEREAS, In 1984, Judge Sotomayor served as a partner in a
2 prestigious law firm in New York, primarily representing
3 prominent corporations engaged in international business; and
 
4     WHEREAS, In 1992, Judge Sotomayor was appointed by
5 President George H.W. Bush to serve on the United States
6 District Court for the Southern District of New York; and
 
7     WHEREAS, In 1998, Judge Sotomayor was appointed by
8 President Bill Clinton to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals
9 for the Second Circuit, the first Hispanic to serve on the
10 Second Circuit, one of the most demanding circuits in the
11 nation; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Judge Sotomayor has more federal judicial
13 experience than any nominee in the last 100 years; and
 
14     WHEREAS, If confirmed, Judge Sotomayor's ascension to the
15 United States Supreme Court would represent a monumental step
16 for America and a better reflection of our national diversity,
17 as she would be the first Hispanic and only the third woman in
18 history to serve as a Justice of the Supreme Court; therefore,
19 be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Judge

1 Sotomayor for this incredible honor and thank her for serving
2 as a role model to all Americans, but particularly women and
3 Latinas; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That we congratulate our President and former
5 colleague Barack Obama for his wisdom in selecting Judge
6 Sotomayor; and be it further
 
7     RESOLVED, That we call upon the United States Senate to
8 confirm Judge Sotomayor after full and fair consideration of
9 her long and distinguished career, consistent with the Senate's
10 constitutional obligation to fully and properly review all
11 judicial nominees submitted by the President of the United
12 States; and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
14 presented to Judge Sonia Sotomayor and all members of the
15 United States Senate.
