SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Geraldine (Hamilton) McCullough of Oak Park, who passed away on December 15, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Geraldine McCullough was born in Mason County, Arkansas; she spent her formative years in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Geraldine McCullough graduated from The Art Institute of Chicago with a Bachelor and Master of Arts Degree in Painting and Art Education; she went on to teach in the Chicago Public Schools and served as Chairman of the Art Department for twelve years at Rosary College (now Dominican University) in River Forest; she received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Dominican University after her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Geraldine McCullough's work is exhibited at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., the National Women's Museum in Washington D.C., and many other galleries and museums; in 1965, she received the George D. Widener Gold Medal for sculpting for her mixed-metal sculpture, entitled Phoenix; in 2000, she was presented the Oak Park Area Arts Council's Joseph Randall Shapiro Award, an award given annually in recognition of "exceptional contributions to the Arts"; and

WHEREAS, Geraldine McCullough served on the Oak Park Public Art Committee and was an active chartered member in the West Towns Chapter of The Links, Inc.; she was also a platinum member of the Chicago Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and

WHEREAS, Geraldine McCullough was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lester W. McCullough, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Geraldine McCullough is survived by her loving son, Lester 'Skip' McCullough, Jr. and his wife, Mary; her grandchildren, Scott and Kimberly; her sisters, Hazel Collymore and Gladys (William) Davis; her brothers, Charles Hamilton and Nathaniel (Joann) Hamilton; and her many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Geraldine McCullough; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Geraldine McCullough as an expression of our sympathy.
