SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Eloy Cueto of Troy, who passed away on
4 March 19, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Eloy Menendez Cueto was born on July 18, 1923, in
6 East St. Louis; he went to Hawthorne grade school and Lansdowne
7 Junior High School in East St. Louis; he was the president and
8 valedictorian of the East St. Louis Senior High School class of
9 1941; Eloy was the son of Amelio and Alicia Cueto, both of whom
10 had been born in Asturias, Spain; and
 
11     WHEREAS, After high school, Eloy went first to the Rolla
12 School of Mines and Metallurgy, then into the United States
13 Navy in World War II; he was an officer aboard the Rinehart, a
14 destroyer escort, serving in the South Pacific; after World War
15 II, he finished his degree in Metallurgy at Rolla; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He worked first at American Zinc Works in Fairmont
17 City and later he worked for 32 years at Granite City Steel;
18 and
 
19     WHEREAS, Throughout his life Eloy was an athlete; he played
20 baseball in the Fountain of Youth League in East St. Louis, and
21 he was an avid golfer, playing until the onset of illness; Eloy

1 was proud of his service to his country in time of war, proud
2 of being a second generation Spaniard, proud of being from East
3 St. Louis, but most of all, he was proud of his large and
4 loving family; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He married Louise Peterson on May 1, 1948 and she
6 preceded him in death; he was also preceded in death by his
7 parents, Amelio and Alicia, nee Menendez, Cueto; his brother,
8 Julius "Hank;" and his son-in-law, David Hartlein; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Eloy Cueto is survived by his five children, Amiel
10 (Elaine), Lloyd (Patti), Maria, Christopher (Rebecca), and
11 David; his grandchildren, Kara (Roger) Osthoff, S. Sgt. Gregory
12 (Chasity) Cueto, Lloyd M. Cueto, Johanna Hartlein, Rebecca
13 (Adam) Severit, Dane (Monica) Hartlein, Emma Cueto, and Sarah
14 Cueto; his great-grandchildren, David and Cecilia Osthoff,
15 Nathaniel and Allysia Severit, Elena Toth, and Paul Amiel
16 Cueto; and his sister, Inez Bratton; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
19 his family and friends, the passing of Eloy Cueto; and be it
20 further
 
21     RESOLVED, That That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to the family of Eloy Cueto as a symbol of our
