SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes that the human
3 embryo is a stage of human life; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Human lives are not objects to be manipulated and
5 destroyed for research purposes; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Human embryonic stem cell research necessitates
7 the dismemberment and destruction of human embryos; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Adult stem cell, umbilical cord blood, and
9 amniotic material research have far exceeded early
10 expectations and continue to yield successful and promising
11 treatments and cures, and are significant and better research
12 alternatives to destructive embryonic stem cell research; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Scientists are making further impressive progress
14 on new techniques, such as fusion regeneration and
15 parthenogenesis, that represent non-destructive alternatives
16 to sacrificing human life; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Human embryonic stem cell research is contrary to
18 the dignity and sanctity of each individual person as a
19 fertilized egg, which combines the essential genetic materials
20 that define and individualize human identity; and

1     WHEREAS, Citizens face an age of powerful and exciting
2 advances in biotechnology and must ensure and support technical
3 advances that will not demean our very humanity, but will serve
4 to uphold the right to life as well as to heal; therefore, be
5 it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
7 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
8 CONCURRING HEREIN, that that the State of Illinois is committed
9 to supporting non-destructive stem cell research.
