HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor accomplishments in the
4 lives of citizens of the State of Illinois; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Aurie A. Pennick, a devoted philanthropist and
6 advocate for equality, has won the Civic Engagement, Community
7 Service and Community Organizing Award from the University of
8 Illinois at Chicago's Gender and Women's Studies Program; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Aurie Pennick designed and implemented a
10 multi-million dollar grant program for small and emerging
11 community organizations as the Assistant Director for Special
12 Grants with the MacArthur Foundation; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Aurie Pennick is an activist in the non-profit
14 sector, leading several organizations such as the Greenhouse
15 Shelter, the first battered women's shelter in the area; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Aurie Pennick has taught at Spertus University and
17 the University of Pennsylvania; she co-authored an article on
18 affordable housing in the book New Chicago; she was also
19 invited by the United States Department of Housing and Urban
20 Development to be a panelist at the national conference in
21 observance of the 40th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act; and

1     WHEREAS, From 1992 to 2002, Aurie Pennick served as the
2 president and CEO of the Leadership Council for Metropolitan
3 Open Opportunities, the only fair housing organization in the
4 nation founded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Aurie Pennick currently serves as the Executive
6 Director and Treasurer of the Field Foundation of Illinois,
7 Inc., and is responsible for the oversight of approximately $60
8 million in foundation assets; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Aurie Pennick has been the recipient of numerous
10 awards, such as the Human Relations Award and the Handy Lindsey
11 Jr. Award; she was appointed to the Chicago Police Board by
12 Mayor Harold Washington and to the Official U.S. Delegation for
13 the Habitat II Global Conference on Cities in Istanbul, Turkey;
14 she was also awarded an Aspen Institute and took part in a
15 Lecture on Inclusiveness in Philanthropy; therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18 congratulate Aurie A. Pennick for winning the Civic Engagement,
19 Community Service and Community Organizing Award from the
20 University of Illinois at Chicago's Gender and Women's Studies
21 Program and wish her continued success in the future; and be it
22 further

1     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
2 presented to Aurie Pennick and the University of Illinois at
3 Chicago's Gender and Women's Studies Program as a symbol of our
4 affection, gratitude, and respect.
