HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the administration, staff, and students of Roosevelt University on the occasion of the university's 65th anniversary and the ground-breaking for a dramatic 32-story building at the university on April 17, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Roosevelt University has graduated more than 70,000 students who have become leaders in their professions and careers, including Chicago's first African-American mayor, Harold Washington; and

WHEREAS, Roosevelt University was founded at a time when most American universities and colleges did not enroll large numbers of minority, immigrant, or Jewish students; and

WHEREAS, Roosevelt University became one of the nation's first colleges to admit all qualified students, regardless of race, religion, or national origin; and

WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Roosevelt University has always remained true to the values of inclusiveness, opportunity, and social justice; today, Roosevelt remains one of the most diverse private universities in the Midwest; and

WHEREAS, Under the leadership of President Chuck Middleton, Roosevelt University has undertaken a major new venture in the construction of the nation's second-tallest university building; when the new vertical campus opens in January of 2012, Roosevelt will have modern classrooms, laboratories, offices, student life facilities, and housing for 600 students; and

WHEREAS, This extraordinary building will both transform Roosevelt University and create construction jobs for hundreds of Chicagoans at a time when there are very few new building projects in the city; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the administration, staff, and students of Roosevelt University on the occasion of the university's 65th anniversary and its new building and wish President Middleton and the entire Roosevelt community many years of continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Roosevelt University President Chuck Middleton and the Roosevelt University Board of Trustees.
