HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Sheila R. Brown on her installation as the 87th President of the National Dental Association on December 18, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brown attended Chicago Public Schools for her elementary education and graduated from Mercy High School; she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Johnson C. Smith University in 1977; she was then accepted into the Teacher Corp-Peace Corp program in Houston, Texas; this gave her the opportunity to teach biology in Ghana, West Africa; she received her Master's in Education from Texas Southern University and her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry; she also holds a certificate in Cosmetics from Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brown practices general dentistry in downtown Chicago with an emphasis in comprehensive care; she is very active in organized dentistry, having formerly served as president of the Lincoln Dental Society (LDS) and is currently serving as its Executive Director; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brown has assumed numerous positions of leadership for the National Dental Association (NDA); she has been in the House of Delegates, a member of the Board of Trustees, and has served as the Treasurer over several years, prior to being elected to the office of President; she is currently serving as President-Elect; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brown is a member of the Hispanic Dental Association and the Sonar Study Club, a Seattle Study Club; she also maintains active membership in Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., Chicago Alumnae Chapter and The Links, Incorporated, Lake Shore Chapter; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brown has served on the Board of Directors for Life Directions of Chicago and Advisory boards for both Gateway Foundation and Kennedy King College; she currently serves nationally on The Links, Incorporated Health & Human Services Committee, and the Community Advisory Committee for the Urban Health Program at The University of Illinois at Chicago; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Brown on becoming the 87th President of the National Dental Association and wish her all the best in the coming years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Sheila Brown as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
