HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Reverend James L. Demus III, who passed away on September 23, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Reverend James Demus III was a graduate of Northern Illinois University and McCormick Theological Seminary; he also studied at Harvard Divinity School; and

WHEREAS, Reverend James Demus III served as Senior Pastor of Park Manor Christian Church in Chicago since September of 1985; under his inspired leadership, the Park Manor Christian Church has flourished as one of the largest and most influential African-American congregations in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); and

WHEREAS, Reverend James Demus III served as the Executive Director of the Chicago South Side Branch of the NAACP; he was a founder of the Ministerial Alliance Against the Digital Divide; he was also the Co-Convener of the Disciples Justice Action Network; and

WHEREAS, Reverend James Demus III was the recipient of numerous awards and certificates, including the prestigious Community Service Fellowship of the Chicago Community Trust; and

WHEREAS, Reverend James Demus III is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his 5 children; his 6 grandchildren; his numerous God-children; and the loving members of the congregation of Park Manor Christian Church; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Reverend James L. Demus III; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Reverend James Demus III as an expression of our sympathy.
