HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Edward R.
4Abderholden of Antioch, who passed away on August 3, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden grew up on the south side of
6Chicago; he was the son of Edward and Ann (Yucik) with his
7sister, Mary Ann Robeck; he married Dolores Raila on January
829, 1950, at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Chicago; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden graduated from Harper High
10School and was the school's commanding officer for ROTC; he
11attended the University of Illinois before entering the U.S.
12Army, where he served as a 2nd lieutenant in post-World War II
13Japan before being honorably discharged on April 1, 1953; and
 
14    WHEREAS, After his father passed away, Edward Abderholden
15returned from service in Japan and began pursuing his medical
16career; he completed his undergraduate studies at Loyola
17University and was accepted into the Stritch School of Medicine
18at Loyola, where he graduated in 1956; he was a member of the
19Century Club (1973) and an Alpha Sigma NU Honor Society member
20(April 1951) at Loyola; he then interned and served general
21surgery residency at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chicago; and

1    WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden and his young family lived for
2a time at the Mother of Cabrini subsidized housing projects
3before moving to Antioch in 1958 and establishing the Orchard
4Medical Center, S.C.; while there, he practiced pediatrics,
5internal medicine, general surgery, and obstetrics/gynecology;
6he had staff privileges at both St. Therese and Victory
7Hospitals in Lake County and twice served as chief of staff at
8St. Therese in 1993 and 1994; he was also the chief of staff at
9Victory Hospital in 1973; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden served as co-director at St.
11Therese Hospital Star Hospice; while at St. Therese, he
12received the Award of Merit in 1986, the Award of Appreciation
13in 1993, and was honored for his years of service in 1997; he
14served on the Barnell Clinic Board in 1970; he served as an
15assistant professor at Chicago Medical School in North Chicago
16in 1977 and was appointed to serve as clinical assistant
17professor in 1995-1996; in 1976, he was appointed as a Life
18member of the American Academy of Family Physicians; he served
19on the A Safe Place Domestic Violence Task Force in Waukegan;
20he also earned the Physician Recognition Award from The
21American Medical Association for 1992-1995 and a certificate of
22appreciation from The Lake County Lung Association in 1985; and
 
23    WHEREAS, While he grew up in the city, Edward Abderholden
24embraced the outdoors in Antioch and was an active hunter,

1fisher, and camper; he was a member of Northern Illinois Ducks
2Unlimited and Lake County Pheasants Forever; he was in his 50th
3year as an Antioch Lions Club member and was honored with the
4Melvin Jones Fellow award for humanitarian services in 2007; he
5was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Antioch Rotary,
6where he presented the "Medical Moment" joke at meetings; he
7was made an honorary member of the Antioch Rescue Squad in
81998; the Village of Antioch awarded him a certificate of
9appreciation for service to citizens on July 3, 1997; he was a
10part of Antioch High School's career education program,
11introducing students to careers in the medical field; he served
12as a basketball referee for St. Peters School after he
13challenged a referee's call at a game and the referee suggested
14he try being a referee; he was also the sideline physician for
15football games at Antioch High School and part of the Ski
16Patrol at Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden enjoyed traveling with his
18friends and family to such places as Lithuania, England,
19Ireland, Kenya, Egypt, China, Japan, Hawaii, and the Galapagos
20Islands; he was very fond of attending concerts, plays,
21recitals, and sporting events that his grandchildren
22participated in; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden was preceded in death by his
24parents; his son, Mark; and his grandson, Christopher; and

1    WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden is survived by his loving wife,
2Dolores; his children and grandchildren, including Edward and
3Lynn and their children, Ned, Lauren, and Brooke; Sue and Lee
4(Keller) and their children, Ona and Eva; Frank and Sue and
5their children, Elizabeth and Katherine; Jim and Linda
6(Lambert) and their children, Blaise and Tyler; Mark and Anne
7Marie and their children, Jeremy Lazar, Katharina, Alex,
8Joanna, and Isabelle; and Guy and Juliann and their children,
9Max, Sam, and Maggie; his brother-in-law, Dr. Frank Raila; and
10his sister-in-law, Florence Lessner; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Edward
14R. Abderholden; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Edward Abderholden as an expression
17of our sympathy.
