HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
3 (MRSA) causes deadly infections in patients that are receiving
4 treatment in health care facilities and affects numerous
5 individuals within our nation's communities; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has
7 estimated that hospital-acquired MRSA infections killed more
8 than 19,000 individuals in the United States in 2006; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Patient and consumer advocacy organizations
10 around the world are lending their voices to a call for
11 leadership and an international commitment to preventing and
12 eradicating MRSA, a disease that has reached pandemic levels
13 and is spreading at an alarming rate; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Patient and consumer advocacy organizations are
15 calling upon health care officials and government leaders to
16 step up and take a more comprehensive approach to stopping MRSA
17 through the implementation of a broad and proactive prevention
18 program; and
 
19     WHEREAS, The MRSA Survivors Network, the first consumer
20 organization in the United States to raise awareness concerning
21 the MRSA epidemic and other such multi-drug resistant health

1 care-acquired infections, has announced that October 2, 2009,
2 has been designated as 'World MRSA Day', which shall be
3 commemorated annually on such date; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The MRSA Survivors Network has designated the 2nd
5 of October as 'World MRSA Day' in order to call attention to
6 this worldwide epidemic; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9 designate the month of October 2010 as World MRSA Awareness
10 Month in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to the MRSA Survivors Network.
