HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the staff of the
4 Glen Carbon Centennial Library on the library being voted the
5 Best Small Library in America in 2010 by the Library Journal
6 and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Glen Carbon Centennial library services started
8 in a one room Reading Center established in 1975, staffed by
9 volunteers; in 1976, officials of the Village of Glen Carbon
10 moved the Reading Center to a 100 year old former school house;
11 a successful referendum in November of 1992 established a
12 village library tax; in 2002, village residents overwhelmingly
13 passed a $2.6 million bond issue to build a new library, and,
14 after nearly two years of construction, the 14,000 square foot
15 library opened on October 4, 2004; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Lighting fixtures resembling coal mine lamps,
17 exposed wood beams, and rafters throughout the building
18 incorporate the theme of coal mining, reflecting Glen Carbon's
19 history of coal mining; and
 
20     WHEREAS, The library features glassed-in study rooms, a
21 community room, a teen area, wireless access, computer
22 workstations located throughout the building, and a floor to

1 ceiling double-sided fireplace that greets visitors from the
2 lobby; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The award "showcases the exemplary work of public
4 libraries serving populations under 25,000 whose high
5 standards, innovative services, and commitment to their
6 community make them extraordinary"; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The Glen Carbon Centennial Library serves a
8 community of 12,000; it was chosen for the award based on its
9 positive and dedicated staff; its creative patron and community
10 outreach programs; its well-chosen resources; and its many
11 initiatives that serve the varying needs of the community;
12 therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
15 congratulate the staff of the Glen Carbon Centennial Library
16 and wish them continued success in all their endeavors; and be
17 it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to Anne Hughes, Library Director, as a symbol of our
20 respect and esteem.
