HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Wojciech Seweryn, who was tragically killed in an airplane crash on April 10, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Wojciech Seweryn was traveling with a Polish delegation, which included Polish President Lech Kacynski and other Polish dignitaries, to Russia for the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, a slaughter of Polish prisoners of war in the village of Katyn in 1940 that killed thousands of Polish military officials, including his own father; and

WHEREAS, One of Wojciech Seweryn's main passions in life was increasing awareness of the Katyn massacre and educating people on the importance of the event; and

WHEREAS, Wojciech Seweryn was born on August 31, 1939 in Poland; he was educated in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1976; and

WHEREAS, Wojciech Seweryn was a talented sculptor who created sculptures and displays for local churches; he also spearheaded the construction of a memorial to the Katyn massacre at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles; and

WHEREAS, Wojciech Seweryn is survived by his wife; his 2 daughters; and his 5 grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Wojciech Seweryn; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Wojciech Seweryn as an expression of our sympathy.
