HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On June 5, 2010, the Chicago Botanic Garden will
3 host its third annual celebration of the United Nations World
4 Environment Programme's World Environment Day; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Activities throughout the Chicago Botanic Garden
6 will explore how people of all ages can protect the earth
7 through awareness and action; garden scientists,
8 conservationists, and horticulturists will give on-going
9 tours, talks, and demonstrations about a range of topics from
10 sustainable lawn care to the study of native pollinators; and
 
11     WHEREAS, A farmers' market stand will offer seasonal
12 produce from the Garden's Green Youth Farm and Windy City
13 Harvest programs and visitors can recycle their plastic plant
14 containers; there will also be an opportunity to learn about
15 all the offerings of the Joseph Regenstein, Jr. School of the
16 Chicago Botanic Garden during a special open house; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District
18 Commissioner Debra Shore will offer the keynote presentation
19 and will talk about the complex nature of Chicago's water
20 systems and explore what the 100 year-old reversal of the
21 Chicago River means for the diversion of water and the
22 introduction of invasive species; and

1     WHEREAS, Woodland ecologist Jim Steffen will lead a tour
2 through the ongoing ecological transformation of the 100-acre
3 McDonald Woods and will talk about aggressive control of
4 invasive plants that has led to a resurgence in native plant
5 communities; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Prairie ecologist Joan O'Shaunghnessy will give a
7 tour of the Dixon Prairie, will review the six different types
8 of prairie communities, and talk about "prescribed burns" and
9 their role in preserving native plants and animals; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Lake ecologist Bob Kirschner will show visitors
11 how over one-quarter of a million wetland plants have been used
12 to stabilize lakeshores and enhance the aquatic habitat for
13 fish, turtles and frogs. He will also demonstrate how the
14 aquatic plant harvester removes invasive aquatic plants;
15 therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18 congratulate the Chicago Botanic Garden as they celebrate World
19 Environment Day and thank them for their efforts to promote
20 knowledge about our world and surroundings; and be it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
