HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Brian
4 Colin Carey of Evergreen Park, who was killed in the line of
5 duty on March 30, 2010; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Brian Carey graduated from Brother Rice High
7 School in 1999; he then attended Loras College in Dubuque,
8 Iowa, where he earned his bachelor's degree in journalism in
9 2003; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Brian Carey had dreamed of being a fireman since
11 he was a little boy; he started his fire service career at the
12 Roberts Park Fire Protection District in March of 2007; he
13 became certified as a Firefighter II in November of 2007; he
14 joined the Homewood Fire Department as a part-time
15 firefighter/paramedic on August 20, 2008; he was hired as a
16 full-time firefighter/paramedic on December 13, 2009; he was
17 also certified in Technical Rescue Awareness, Hazmat
18 Awareness, and Hazmat Technician and had National Incident
19 Management System 100 200 & 700 certifications; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Brian Carey enjoyed reading, traveling, and
21 watching shows on the Discovery Channel; he was affectionately
22 known as "Boo" to his family and friends; and

1     WHEREAS, On March 30, 2010, the Homewood Fire Department
2 was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at a
3 single-family residence in Homewood; the first-arriving fire
4 crews found a house with visible smoke and flames and were
5 advised that at least one occupant remained inside the
6 structure; Brian Carey was the first to enter the burning
7 house; during the rescue attempt, Brian and his colleague,
8 Karra Kopas, were injured; Brian succumbed to his injuries and
9 passed away while at the hospital; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The courage and bravery of Brian Carey has been
11 commemorated in other parts of the world; the Dublin, Ireland
12 Fire Brigade paid a tribute to Brian with the presentation of a
13 bronze statue emblematic of his heroism on April 28, 2010; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Brian Carey is survived by his parents, Brian and
15 Kathleen; his sisters, Margaret and Annie; and his brother,
16 Kevin; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Brian
20 Colin Carey; and be it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
