SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 1305/10-8.1 new

    Amends the Department of Human Services Act. Provides that subject to appropriations the Department of Human Services shall designate a member of its staff as Autism Spectrum Disorder Project Coordinator to address issues related to autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Establishes the project coordinator's duties including working in conjunction with members of the Illinois Autism Task Force; coordinating any and all State governmental efforts concerning ASD; and promoting awareness of ASD.

1     AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Department of Human Services Act is amended
5 by adding Section 10-8.1 as follows:
 
6     (20 ILCS 1305/10-8.1 new)
7     Sec. 10-8.1. Autism spectrum disorder project coordinator.
8 Subject to appropriations, the Department of Human Services
9 shall designate a member of its staff as Autism Spectrum
10 Disorder Project Coordinator to address issues related to
11 autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The project coordinator's
12 duties may include, without limitation, the following:
13         (1) Working in conjunction with members of the Illinois
14     Autism Task Force to:
15             (i) identify and promote best practice standards
16         for the diagnosis, treatment, education, and training
17         of persons with ASD within existing systems of care;
18             (ii) provide educational opportunities throughout
19         the State on diagnosis and treatment;
20             (iii) support existing systems of care for persons
21         with ASD across the life span;
22             (iv) work with universities and providers to
23         identify untapped resources and unmet needs; and

1             (v) encourage and support research efforts on
2         services to persons with ASD across the life span;
3         (2) Coordinating any and all State governmental
4     efforts concerning ASD;
5         (3) Identifying and removing barriers to autism
6     programs;
7         (4) Representing the needs and wants of persons with
8     ASD and their families;
9         (5) Promoting awareness of ASD; and
10         (6) Performing all duties, related to ASD, assigned by
11     the Secretary of the Department of Human Services.
12 For purposes of this Section, "autism spectrum disorders" has
13 the same meaning ascribed to it in Section 10 of the Autism
14 Spectrum Disorders Reporting Act.
