SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Carrie Mae (Deering) Coleman, who passed away on March 1, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was born in Pickens, Mississippi to Willie C. Gibson and Lillie E. Deering on August 15, 1950; she was raised by her grandparents, Reverend Amos and Evelyne Deering; she committed to her faith at an early age at Holy City Baptist Church, where she discovered her talent for singing; she sang throughout her hometown, which led to a full scholarship to Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where she majored in music and minored in education; she graduated with a bachelor's degree in elementary education; she married Lee Willie Coleman on August 1, 1970, and they moved from Mississippi to Joliet; she continued her education at Governors State University and earned a graduate certificate in public administration; she then earned a graduate certificate in curriculum and instruction from National Lewis University; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was employed by many educational institutions in Joliet, including the Joliet Job Corps Center, Joliet Junior College, Washington Junior High, and Fairmont Junior High; she also worked as a personal tutor and was a licensed grant writer; and

WHEREAS, After moving to Joliet, Carrie Coleman and her husband joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, and she sang in the Mt. Zion Voices of Zion and taught Sunday School for over 20 years; her commitment to her faith continued to grow, and she became an ordained minister in 2008; she was a stranger to no one and will be remembered for her dedication to her work; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents; her brother, Richard Spurlock; and her brothers-in-law, Floyd L. Coleman and Jessie E. Coleman; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman is survived by her husband, Lee; her children, Nicholas T. (Tiana) Coleman Sr., Nicol Y. Coleman, and Natalie A. Coleman; her grandchildren, Jaylin Coleman, Nicholas Coleman Jr., Malik Coleman, Jurnee Coleman, and Tamia Coleman; her godchildren, Darren Ulmer, the late Dr. Timmothy Bailey, Kyle Pierce, and Syretta Edwards; her siblings, Lonnie B. Spurlock, Nathaniel Spurlock, George Spurlock, Faye L. Spurlock, and Francis Spurlock Andrews; her brother-in-law, Eric J. (Delois) Coleman; her sisters-in-law, Earnestine Coleman Mayo, Bertha R. (Michael) Hudson, Elois (Keith) Goss, and Madeline C. Coleman; and her many other family members and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Carrie Mae (Deering) Coleman and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Carrie Coleman as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
