SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Doris Judith Steffen, who passed away on
4 June 2, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Doris Judith Steffen was the third daughter of
6 Kenneth P. Johnston, M.D. and Doris Tyler Johnston, R.N.; she
7 married Fred Steffen on June 25, 1960 and had three children,
8 Julie Steffen (Detlev Pansch), F. John (Kerin Kelly), and
9 Robert (Ketki Shroff); and
 
10     WHEREAS, Doris Judith Steffen earned her bachelor's and
11 master's degrees in English Literature at Northern Illinois
12 University and attended post-graduate summer classes at Oxford
13 and in Cambridge, England; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Doris Judith Steffen was employed as an English
15 teacher at Elgin and Streamwood High Schools for 19 years; she
16 also worked as a hostess and co-manager of the restaurant Cafe
17 Magdalena for six years; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Doris Judith Steffen was a member of the First
19 Congregational Church of Elgin and was active in its "Mother's
20 Morning Out" and "Little English School" programs; she was an
21 active member of the Elgin Junior Service Board, the Northern

1 Kane County Cancer Society, and Women's Fitness Camp
2 (Wisconsin); she was on the founding board of the Elgin Parent
3 Co-Op Preschool and was a member of the Elgin Image Commission
4 and the Elgin Symphony League; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Doris Judith Steffen enjoyed attending monthly
6 book club meetings with her fellow teachers, reading The New
7 York Times, the Daily Herald, and the Daily Courier, and
8 solving crossword and acrostics puzzles; she was an
9 accomplished water color painter and a member of the Fox Valley
10 Art League; she and her husband especially enjoyed traveling
11 and went with the Elgin Choral Union on tours to Germany,
12 Austria, Switzerland, and England; they also traveled to
13 Australia, China, Korea, Japan, and Bolivia; her most loved
14 hobby, however, was caring for and riding Jazz, her 22-year-old
15 thoroughbred mare; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Doris Judith Steffen is survived by her children;
17 her grandchildren, Joan, Chloe, Lili, Nicole, Abigail, Alyssa,
18 Liam, and Tristan; and her sisters, Charlotte Wurth and Nancy
19 Johnston Boland (Richard); therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22 her family and friends, the passing of Doris Judith Steffen;
23 and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the family of Doris Judith Steffen as an
3 expression of our sympathy.
