SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Edward John Kane III, who passed away on May 29, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Edward John Kane III was born on September 26, 1927 in Chicago; he was the son of Edward J. Kane II and Josephine Helen (Hurm) Kane; he was baptized at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Chicago; he married Ann Louise (Harty) Kane on June 24, 1950 at St. Patrick's Church in Seneca; and

WHEREAS, Edward John Kane III was a 1945 graduate of Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin and a 1950 graduate of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa; he lettered in sports in both high school and college and was well known for his track and his Golden Gloves abilities; his classmates dubbed him "Sugar Kane"; and

WHEREAS, Edward John Kane III worked as a "steel man" for his entire career; his career, which spanned fifty years, included employment with major companies such as Caterpillar Tractor, A.M. Castle & Company, Earl M. Jorgensen, Midwest Metals, and Garbe Iron Works; the latter half of his working years were spent in a family business venture with his sons Ed, Tim, and Bill at E.K.S. Steel, which won the prestigious Inc. 500 Award in 1993 and 1994 recognizing America's fastest growing companies; and

WHEREAS, Edward John Kane III was easily identified as a fine "Irishman" by both his looks and his humor; his paternal grandmother, Bridget Pender, immigrated to the United States from Clondegad, County Clare, Ireland; Mr. Kane made two unforgettable trips to Ireland with his family in 1996 and 2004; and

WHEREAS, Edward John Kane III enjoyed basking in the sun for hours, telling stories about all the great fun he experienced in his life, his "baby", the swimming pool, and vacations in Green Lake, Wisconsin with his family; and

WHEREAS, Edward John Kane III was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandparents, Edward and Bridget Pender Kane; and his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Josephine Hurm; and

WHEREAS, Edward John Kane III is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Ann Louise; his children, JoAnn, Colleen (Bill) Howard, Pat (Nick) Moore, Edward IV (Cheryl) Kane, Maureen Marlatt Braun, Tim (Jill) Kane, and Bill (Kim) Kane; and his grandchildren, Sarah, Anna, Jennifer, Bridget, Timothy, Edward V, Sean, Riley, Isaac, Will, Barbara, Devon, Ethan, and Liam; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Edward John Kane III; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Edward John Kane III as an expression of our sympathy.
