HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Mrs. Helen Dumas of Mt. Vernon on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and

WHEREAS, She was born on February 24, 1908 in Grenada, Mississippi to Robert and Ophelia (Patterson) Edwards; she was one of fourteen children born to this union; and

WHEREAS, She quit school at an early age to help her parents with the crops; after moving to St. Louis in the 1930s, she began attending an adult education program and later received a cosmetology license; she worked in St. Louis for ten years before moving to Mt. Vernon, where she retired in 1978; and

WHEREAS, She is a devoted member of the Church of God in Christ and loves to attend Bible School; and

WHEREAS, She is a member of the Jefferson County African-American Heritage Committee and faithfully attends all the meetings; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Mrs. Helen Dumas on the occasion of her 100th birthday; she is truly a blessing and an example to the people of the State of Illinois of a life well-lived; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Helen Dumas as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
