HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Rosemary
4 Berkel Crisp of Marion, who passed away on December 1, 2007;
5 and
 
6     WHEREAS, Rosemary Berkel Crisp was a noted business leader
7 and co-owner of Pepsi MidAmerica Company; she was a women's
8 healthcare activist, philanthropist, and mother of six
9 children; Mrs. Crisp was recently honored by Southern Illinois
10 University Carbondale with its prestigious Inspiring Women of
11 Achievement Award in October 2007; the honor befitted Mrs.
12 Crisp's lifelong devotion to improving the quality of
13 healthcare services across Southern Illinois and beyond; and
 
14     WHEREAS, She was born in Chicago and graduated in 1958 from
15 St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Evansville, Indiana;
16 she worked as a nurse from 1958 to 1960 at Marion Memorial
17 Hospital; she married Harry L. Crisp II in 1960 and focused her
18 energies on raising a family, community service, and growing
19 the family business, Pepsi MidAmerica Company, which she
20 co-owned with her husband; from 1970 to 1985, Mrs. Crisp was a
21 volunteer nurse for the American Red Cross, Lions Club, and
22 Girl Scouts; even though she ceased practicing as a nurse in
23 the mid-1980s, she continued to renew her nursing license every

1 two years; and
 
2     WHEREAS, She was co-founder of the Southern Illinois
3 Women's Health Conference and also served on the board of
4 directors for the Hands of Hope clinic, which offers free
5 health care to needy families; her charitable work has been
6 recognized with dozens of awards; Mrs. Crisp has been
7 previously honored as Citizen of the Year by the Greater Marion
8 Area Chamber of Commerce; Southeast Missouri State University
9 named their nursing facility Rosemary Berkel Crisp Hall of
10 Nursing in recognition of her many accomplishments; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Mrs. Crisp was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic
12 Church in Marion; she served on dozens of boards, foundations,
13 and committees during her lifetime; at the time of her passing,
14 she was a Trustee of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois, and a
15 Director of the National Institute of Health, National
16 Institute of Nursing Research in Washington, D.C., Southeast
17 Missouri State University Foundation in Cape Girardeau, John A.
18 Logan College Foundation in Carterville, University of
19 Tennessee Women's Philanthropy Alliance, and the Marion Civic
20 Center Foundation in Marion; her past board of director
21 positions include Director of the National League for Nursing
22 in New York, and the Society for Advancement of Women's Health
23 Research, Washington, D.C.; and

1     WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert
2 and Rose Berkel; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Harry
4 L. Crisp II; her son, H. Lee Crisp III and wife, Stacie; her
5 daughters, Cynthia Crisp Dickens and husband, Brian Keith, Cara
6 Crisp Sims and husband, Cris, Catherine Crisp Newbold and
7 fiancé, Greg Wilson, Carole Crisp Schwarm and husband, Mark,
8 and Cheryl Crisp Rabbitt and husband, Bob; her brother, Jim
9 Berkel and wife, Sue; her sisters, Pat Pulley and husband,
10 Barney, and Delores McCuan and husband, LaVerne; her sixteen
11 grandchildren, Brandy Newbold Cohlmeyer, Tyler Newbold,
12 Cameron Newbold, Ryan Rabbitt, Olivia Rabbitt, Taylor Rabbitt,
13 Alexandria Rabbitt, Hunter Dickens, Harrison Dickens, Hayden
14 Dickens, Hallie Crisp, Harry L. Crisp IV, Palmer Sims, Luke
15 Sims, Jacob Schwarm, and Jeremiah Schwarm; and one
16 great-grandchild, Elaine Cohlmeyer; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of
20 Rosemary Berkel Crisp; and be it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to the family of Rosemary Crisp as a symbol of our
23 sincere sympathy.
