HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to
4 the family and friends of Michael E. Shampine of Decatur, who
5 passed away on January 6, 2007; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Michael Shampine was born on July 18, 1951; his
7 parents were Eugene and Patricia Shampine; he served his
8 country in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1974; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Michael Shampine returned from the Air Force and
10 began his career as a roofer, joining Roofers Local 92; he
11 worked as a roofer for 33 years, including 17 years as Business
12 Manager/Financial Secretary for Roofers Local 92, and 8 years
13 as president of the Decatur Trades and Labor Assembly; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Michael Shampine always gave of himself, devoting
15 thousands of hours of his time to various community and
16 charitable causes, including the United Way, Project Success,
17 the Decatur Dropout Taskforce, the Decatur Planning
18 Commission, the Workforce Investment Board, the Decatur
19 Housing Authority, the Community Investment Corporation of
20 Decatur, the NALC Food Drive, and the Decatur Area Labor
21 Management Committee; and

1     WHEREAS, Michael Shampine was recognized throughout the
2 community as passionate and articulate, an advocate who fought
3 to improve the lives of working men and women through his
4 efforts in organized labor and Democratic politics; he was a
5 likeable but tough leader who fought for what he believed in
6 and refused to back down under any circumstances; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Michael Shampine is survived by his mother,
8 Patricia Shampine; his daughter, Leslie Shampine; his
9 brothers, David, Mark, and Eugene Shampine; his sisters, Denise
10 Martin, Susan Smothers, Julie McGinnis, Cindy Shampine,
11 Patricia Robinson, and Francine Lower; his 21 nieces and
12 nephews; and his longtime friend and fellow labor advocate Amy
13 Girardi; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
17 Michael Shampine; who will be fondly remembered for his
18 positive attitude and legacy as a compassionate and effective
19 leader, and as a good friend to those who were lucky enough to
20 call him so; and be it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to the family of Michael Shampine as a symbol of our
23 sympathy.
