HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Peter J. Stanlis of Rockford on the publication of Robert Frost: The Poet As Philosopher in October of 2007; and

WHEREAS, The book was published by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute in Wilmington, Delaware and distributed by the University of Chicago Press; it honors twenty-three years of friendship with Robert Frost and fulfills a promise made to the poet by Dr. Stanlis that he would someday write a book about Robert Frost and his art as a poet and philosopher; and

WHEREAS, The book captures Robert Frost and his perspective on the cultural heritage of Western and American civilization, showing human creativity and the arts provide the basis of civilization, its education, science, and politics; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Stanlis was the co-founder of the American Society of Eighteenth Century Studies in 1969; he is one of the few Americans honored with an appointment as a British Academy Research Fellow in 1987; he became a member of the Academic Board of the National Humanities Institute in 1987; and he was appointed to the National Endowment for the Humanities by former President Reagan and served from 1982 to 1988; and

WHEREAS, From 1968 to 1988 Dr. Stanlis was a Professor at Rockford College and the chairman of the English Department; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Stanlis is now Professor Emeritus of Rockford College and a forty-year resident of the City of Rockford; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Stanlis on the publication of his new book and wish him the best in his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Peter Stanlis as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
