HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Carl Alexander on his retirement as Public Safety Director for the City of Danville; and

WHEREAS, Carl Alexander was born and raised in Danville; he served in the U.S. Army in Korea, Germany, and Vietnam; he was a senior drill instructor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; in 1969, the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. recruited him to be a police officer; instead of going back to Vietnam, he chose to become a police officer; and

WHEREAS, As a police officer in Washington, D.C., Carl Alexander dealt with demonstrations and riots, including the 1971 May Day protests; he started in the special operations division, but also worked in internal affairs, as well as with murders, kidnappings and bombings and as a police academy instructor; he was an investigator in the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan and helped in the recovery of passengers in the Air Florida Flight 90 crash in January 1982; and

WHEREAS, Carl Alexander briefly retired in October 1991 and came back to Danville prior to becoming director of security/chief of police at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System in May 1992; he became police chief of Danville in November 1999; in 2004 Alexander's position changed from police chief to director of public safety, a position which oversees both the police and fire departments of Danville; and

WHEREAS, Carl Alexander and his wife Janet have two daughters and three grandchildren; during his retirement Mr. Alexander plans on spending a couple of months enjoying his hobby, fishing, before deciding on any future plans; and

WHEREAS, A retirement ceremony for Carl Alexander will be held on May 31, 2007 at 5 P.M. at the Harrison Park Clubhouse in Danville; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Carl Alexander on his retirement and wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Carl Alexander as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
