HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of the Village of Frankfort, George C. Sangmeister was actively involved in the development of early Frankfort and was well known and respected for his outstanding leadership; and

WHEREAS, He was elected Village Trustee in 1934 and Mayor in 1935, holding that office until 1965; and

WHEREAS, He and his wife, Rose, owned and operated Sangmeister Electric Sales, an electrical appliance, radio, and television store on Kansas Street, where he became one of the pioneers of television sales in the county; and

WHEREAS, George C. Sangmeister also served as President of the Frankfort Fire Department and Frankfort Lions Club; Mayor Sangmeister spearheaded construction of the Village Hall on Kansas Street in 1940, was integral in the creation of the Frankfort Park District and served as General Chairman of the Village's 1955 Centennial Celebration; and

WHEREAS, In 1961, George Sangmeister initiated an annual festival known as "Sauerkraut Days" which evolved over the years into the "Frankfort Fall Festival", drawing tens of thousands of visitors to Frankfort every year; during his tenure as Mayor, the Village of Frankfort's population grew from about 550 to over 4,000 residents; and

WHEREAS, A sculpture will be dedicated on May 26, 2007 at the Frankfort Founders Center to George C. Sangmeister for his hard work and devotion to the Village of Frankfort; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor the life of George C. Sangmeister and acknowledge the legacy and history of this important person in the life of Frankfort; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of George C. Sangmeister and the Village of Frankfort as a symbol of our respect.
