HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Ann Colette Scanu, who passed away on February 24, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Ann Colette Scanu, nee Wahl, was born on September 2nd, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio; she was the first born child of Dr. William and Coletta Schertzer Wahl; she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy High School in 1945, and then began her studies at Ursuline College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1949; and

WHEREAS, In 1949 Ann took a job at Cleveland Clinic where she worked as a research assistant for the next decade; it was here that she met Dr. Angelo Scanu, whom she married on June 7th, 1958; they settled in Hyde Park, where they raised their two children, Gabriella and Marco; and

WHEREAS, In 1971, Ann began working as a part time tutor at St. Thomas the Apostle School and within a few years the position became full-time; at the time of her retirement in the spring of 2004, Ann had been a member of the faculty at St. Thomas for over 32 years, making hers one of the longest teaching careers in the history of the school; and

WHEREAS, In the middle of her tenure at St. Thomas, Ann Scanu went back to school, earning her Master of Education degree from the University of Chicago in 1979; and

WHEREAS, Ann enjoyed volunteering her time to a number of Chicago organizations, including the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Visitors' Center at the Chicago Cultural Center; she was also a familiar face at the Museum of Science and Industry, where she volunteered for a quarter-century; Ann enjoyed traveling to many corners of the globe, beginning with her first trip to Europe in 1953; Ann visited five of the seven continents during the course of the next half-century; and

WHEREAS, In 1984, Ann met her lifelong pen pal during a visit to the town of Yeelanna, Australia, and participated in no fewer than two archeological digs in England and France; Ann loved the scenery, people, and culture of her husband's homeland, Italy, and enjoyed many, many happy times with friends and family in that beautiful country; and

WHEREAS, Ann also loved a good book, a beer, a salty snack, and was eager to share with the ones she loved; and

WHEREAS, Ann Scanu is survived by her husband, Angelo; her daughter, Gabriella (Warren); her son, Marco (Jamie); her two grandsons, Niccolo and Matteo; her sister, Sue; her brother, Jerry (Phyllis); and her many nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by her parents and her sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Ralph "Mac" McCool; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Ann Colette Scanu; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ann Colette Scanu as an expression of our sympathy.
