HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Virgie
4 Louise Brooks Harris of Chicago, who passed away on May 27,
5 2008; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Virgie Louise Brooks Harris was born August 24,
7 1924 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to the late Robert G Brooks and
8 Hattie L Kimbrough; she attended school in Mississippi until
9 secondary level and continued that education at DuSable High
10 School after moving to Chicago in her late teens; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Virgie met and married the late Joseph B Harris;
12 they were blessed with four beautiful children; she was a
13 dedicated mother and wife and devoted her entire life to caring
14 for her family, offering constant nurturing and support; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Virgie was the owner of the H & A Restaurant, a
16 business started by her mother in 1945, which she came to work
17 at when arriving in Chicago in the 1940s; after being an
18 employee to her mother for many years, her mother made her a
19 partner in the business in the 1960s; and
 
20     WHEREAS, The business was incorporated in the 1970s under
21 the original name it was founded as, H & A Shrimp Shop

1 Incorporated, and remained a State of Illinois legal corporate
2 entity until 2006, at which time Virgie retired and sold the
3 business; H & A was a community icon, providing jobs and
4 economic viability to the City of Chicago for 62 years, and
5 will be forever remembered by all who either worked or ate
6 there; and
 
7     WHEREAS, On Tuesday, May 27, 2008, Virgie was asked to work
8 for the Heavenly Restaurant in Eternity, and she gladly
9 accepted the chance to serve all and be re-united with all her
10 friends and family whom had preceded her in passing; she always
11 remembered her customers, which numbered in the thousands;
12 therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
15 mourn, along with her family, friends, and former customers and
16 co-workers, the passing of Virgie Louise Brooks Harris; and be
17 it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Virgie Louise Brooks Harris as a
20 symbol of our sincere sympathy.
