HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Clint Kesinger,
4 Deanna Shive, Brandon Early, and their fellow students and
5 faculty for their successful production of "A Rough and
6 Boisterous Place" at North Greene High School; and
 
7     WHEREAS, "A Rough and Boisterous Place" is a play based
8 upon a book, titled "Murder, Legend & Lore of Walkerville,
9 Illinois 1836-1898", written by history teacher David McGraw
10 and former North Greene students Bond Beard, Lisa Bridges, and
11 Jennifer Graham in 1998; the original research paper was turned
12 into a pamphlet and sold, with the money raised given to the
13 girls for their college expenses; both the play and the book
14 recall the tumultuous events surrounding three murders in the
15 1800s in the Greene County township of Walkerville; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Founded by John Walker in 1836, Walkerville was a
17 tiny hamlet that was plagued by violence in the middle to late
18 19th century; in one case, an argument broke out during a
19 festival and a young man, John Calvin Vineyard, shot and
20 murdered a young man by the name of Edgar Yager; Vineyard was
21 never tried for the murder because no one attempted to
22 apprehend him after the murder took place; years later, a man
23 born by the name of Frank Painter was responsible for the

1 deaths of Thomas Tatman and Perry Johnson, the latter of whom
2 was the town's deputy; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Intrigued by the peculiar history of Walkerville,
4 Bond Beard, Lisa Bridges, and Jennifer Graham, along with many
5 other North Greene students, worked long hours during and after
6 school to create the play; and
 
7     WHEREAS, "A Rough and Boisterous Place" is a dramatic play
8 which also blends some elements of comedy and light-heartedness
9 in the midst of its grisly events; the production also boasts a
10 musical production and lovable characters, as well as direct
11 quotes from articles on the events that ran back in early
12 editions of the White Hall Register; and
 
13     WHEREAS, "A Rough and Boisterous Place" was nominated for
14 an award by the Illinois Geneological Society for its attention
15 to history and research; and
 
16     WHEREAS, "A Rough and Boisterous Place" has been a
17 completely student-driven project, from set design to
18 directing to the script itself; students from North Greene have
19 been involved in every aspect of the play's research and
20 writing, making the play a truly unique project in this State;
21 therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3 congratulate Clint Kesinger, Deanna Shive, Brandon Early, and
4 their fellow students at North Greene High School for their
5 successful production of "A Rough and Boisterous Place" and
6 applaud their dedication to Illinois history and folklore; and
7 be it further
 
8     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
9 presented to Clint Kesinger, Deanna Shive, Brandon Early, and
10 North Greene High School as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
