HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the staff of DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY on the occasion of the newspaper's 100th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, The history of DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY began in 1907 when the Polish National Alliance decided to create a newspaper to serve the entire Polish-American community during their 1907 National Convention; the first edition of DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY, literally translated to "The Alliance Daily", was printed on January 15, 1908; the newspaper's first editor was Frank Jablonski, a dedicated journalist and Polish-American activist and former PNA President and ZGODA editor; and

WHEREAS, In the coming decades after the inception of DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY, the newspaper grew to become the most widely read Polish newspaper in the City of Chicago, no small task in such a hotly contested city; by 1923, after taking over rival newspaper National Daily, the circulation surpassed 54,000; under Karol Piatkiewicz, the newspaper's editor from 1931 until 1967, DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY became the authoritative source of news regarding "all things Polish", and made a particularly memorable contribution during World War II and the Cold War years; and

WHEREAS, In recent decades, editors such as Jan Krawiec, Anna Rychlinska, and Wojciech Bialasiewicz have enabled DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY to reach out to new generations of Polish immigrants and their families, providing outstanding coverage of important subjects such as the rise of the Solidarity movement, the papacy of John Paul II, the fall of Soviet communism, and the rise of democracy in Poland; and

WHEREAS, The unparalleled journalistic integrity and intense commitment to the Polish-American community exhibited by the staff of DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY is worthy of the greatest respect; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the staff of DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY on the occasion of the newspaper's 100th anniversary and wish them continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the staff of DZIENNIK ZWIAZKOWY as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
