HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 84

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly wish
3 to honor those who have served our country with distinction and
4 valor in the armed forces; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Sergeant John F. Baker Jr., so distinguished
6 himself in combat during the Vietnam War in acting above and
7 beyond the call of duty by placing himself repeatedly in harm's
8 way for his fellow soldiers, that he received the nation's
9 highest military award, the Congressional Medal of Honor; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Veterans organizations, including the Vietnam
11 Veterans of the Quad Cities, have urged the commemoration of
12 Sergeant John F. Baker Jr.'s heroism by naming a bridge
13 crossing in the Quad City region in his honor; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Sergeant John F. Baker Jr.'s dedication to his
15 country should be commended and praised in the highest fashion;
16 therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
19 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that the Interstate 280 Bridge in
20 Rock Island County be designated the Sergeant John F. Baker Jr.
21 Bridge; and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
2 is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
3 State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
4 giving notice of the name; and be it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
6 delivered to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of
7 Transportation; the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
8 Transportation; the county boards of Rock Island and Scott
9 counties; the cities of Rock Island, Davenport, Bettendorf, and
10 Silvis; and the Village of Milan.
