HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The College of DuPage's mission is to be a center
3for excellence in teaching, learning, and cultural
4experiences; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The College of DuPage seeks to provide accessible,
6affordable, and comprehensive education to all district
7residents; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The College of DuPage's Cleve Carney Gallery in
9the McAninch Arts Center has received the proud distinction of
10being selected to host 26 original works of art from the artist
11Frida Kahlo that are currently held by the Museo Delores Olmedo
12in Mexico; for over 40 years, such works have not been on
13display in Illinois for residents to experience; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Hispanic population has been a growing and
15dynamic contributor to the State of Illinois; the struggles and
16triumph of Frida Kahlo are a part of that cultural history; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The College of DuPage seeks to present these
18unique Frida Kahlo pieces at the College of DuPage in 2020,
19with consent from the Mexican Consulate, who considers these
20pieces to be a national treasure of Mexico; and

1    WHEREAS, The College of DuPage seeks to use this exhibit to
2develop and cultivate unique educational and learning
3opportunities for not just its students and the community, but
4also for people from all over that the exhibit is expected to
5bring to Illinois; and
 
6    WHEREAS, An exhibition of this caliber, valued at over $130
7million dollars, is unprecedented at a community college; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The Exhibition is planned to feature 150 personal
9photographs of Frida Kahlo, a documentary film, a historical
10exhibition, a poetry garden, a children's area, a gift shop,
11and a concession area; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The College of DuPage seeks to promote the
13Exhibition to K-12 students with a children's area containing a
14new work about Frida Kahlo by Illinois resident, renowned
15author and illustrator of over 50 children's books, Mike
16Venezia; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The College of DuPage seeks to surround the
18exhibition with a series of live, world-class performances
19celebrating art, culture, diversity, and Mexican heritage,
20including performances by Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, a film
21series, the children's musical Sugarskull, and a Frida
22Kahlo-themed classical concert performed by The New

1Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Kirk Muspratt;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Cleve Carney Museum will require an expansion
4and transformation to museum-grade security standards to host
5this exhibition, and certain funds for this expansion have been
6preliminarily approved by the Board; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we commend the College of DuPage's role in this unique cultural
10opportunity that will benefit over 130,000 residents and school
11children in the State of Illinois and for being selected to
12host 26 original works of art from the artist Frida Kahlo; and
13be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the College of DuPage as an expression of our
16esteem and respect.
