SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Ernest J. Mehlan of Mount Prospect on Thursday, April 20, 2006; and

WHEREAS, He was born June 28, 1919, in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Mehlan retired in 1982 from the Chicago Sun-Times advertising department after 44 years of service; he won the Marshall Field Award in 1976; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Mehlan served the community of Mt. Prospect for 38 years, where he was a member and past president of the Senior Advisory Council, the senior golf league at the Mount Prospect Golf Club, and the Senior Men's Club; he also served for many years on the District 214 Senior Celebration Committee; he was the senior advisor to the Mount Prospect Jaycees and was named an honorary lifetime member of the Jaycees; and

WHEREAS, He was a two-time Mount Prospect Elderhonor award winner and a Mount Prospect Shining Star award winner; he also received the Cook County Sheriffs Senior Medal of Honor; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Mehlan was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church for 38 years; and

WHEREAS, His wife, Dorothy K. Mehlan (nee Straub), preceded him in death; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Ernest J. Mehlan has been deeply felt by many, especially his daughter, Janice (William) Scott; his grandchildren, Rachel, Jennifer, and Johanna; and his siblings, Christine Wagner, Herbert (Lee) Mehlan, and Deloris Bose; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Ernest J. Mehlan, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
