SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Walter M. Smith, a lifetime
4 resident of Johnsburg, on Sunday, March 27, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born on November 5, 1916, in Johnsburg, to
6 John and Lena (Schaefer) Smith; he was baptized at St. John the
7 Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, where he was a longtime
8 member, sang in the choir, and served as an usher; he also
9 attended St. John the Baptist School; he married Vivian
10 Reinboldt on September 28, 1940, at St. John the Baptist
11 Church; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Mr. Smith valiantly served his country as a member
13 of the U.S. Army during World War II; he worked for Joseph H.
14 Huemann and Sons Well Drilling Co. in Johnsburg for 40 years
15 before retiring; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He was a former member of the Catholic Order of
17 Foresters, the Johnsburg Community Club, the McHenry Moose
18 Lodge, and the McHenry Veterans of Foreign Wars post, where he
19 was known for his precision drill team; he was recognized for
20 his baseball ability, playing first base for the Johnsburg
21 Tigers; and
 
22     WHEREAS, The passing of Walter M. Smith has been deeply
23 felt by many, especially his wife of 64 years, Vivian Smith;
24 his son, John J. (Janet) Smith; his daughters, Janet (fiance
25 Robert Nelson) Arnold and Barbara Schmidt; his grandchildren,
26 Kimberly (Shawn) Sweet, Kevin (Sheila) Schmidt, Scott (fiancee
27 Denise Fontana) Smith, Patrick (fiancee Lindsay Runft) Smith,
28 and Jonathan Smith; his great-grandchildren, Markus and
29 Melanie Sweet; his brothers-in-law, Bud Meyers and Vern
30 (Dorothy) Reinboldt; his sisters-in-law, Florence Smith,
31 Lucille Smith, Elvira Smith, and Joann (Don) Miller; and his

1 many other relatives and dear friends; he was preceded in death
2 by his parents; nine brothers and sisters, Ray, Fred, Leo, Ben,
3 and Clarence Smith, and Evelyn Freund, Leona Meyers, Eleanor
4 Alfhoff, and Elsie Schmitt; and his son-in-law, Phil Schmidt;
5 therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
7 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8 Walter M. Smith, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his
9 family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
10 further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to his family as an expression of our sincere
13 condolences.
