HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, It is with sadness that the members of the
3 Illinois House of Representatives have learned of the death of
4 Army Sgt. Jacob Henry Demand of Palouse, Washington, on
5 September 14, 2004; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Sgt. Demand was killed while on patrol in Mosul,
7 Iraq; he was in charge of seven men, and used his body to
8 shield the civilian translator traveling with them; six of the
9 seven men were injured in the surprise attack; he went to Iraq
10 in January 2004 with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry
11 Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division from Ft. Lewis,
12 Washington, and was scheduled to return in October 2004; during
13 his career in the Army, he also served in Saudi Arabia and
14 Korea; and
 
15     WHEREAS, He was born September 9, 1975, in San Diego,
16 California, and was a 1995 graduate of Garfield-Palouse High
17 School; he had tested himself in school sports - football,
18 basketball, baseball - and loved hunting and fishing; he joined
19 the Army two weeks after graduating from high school; and
 
20     WHEREAS, He was a dedicated and committed soldier who was
21 well-liked and respected by his soldiers and by his fellow
22 leaders; he carried out his duties with pride and confidence
23 and he gave his life trying to keep other people safe; he was
24 awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and three Good
25 Conduct medals for service and leadership abilities; and
 
26     WHEREAS, He is survived by his parents, Bruce and Char
27 Baldwin, and three children, a daughter, Reanne, and sons, Josh
28 and Seth; therefore, be it
 
29     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
30 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1 we honor Army Sgt. Jacob Henry Demand for his commitment,
2 dedication, and sacrifice in the service of his family,
3 community, and country; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That we pray for the safety and well-being of his
5 fellow service members as they continue to stand in harm's way
6 in service in Iraq and around the world; and be it further
 
7     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
9 sympathy.
