HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, It is with sadness that the members of the Illinois House of Representatives have learned of the death of Army Sgt. Jacob Henry Demand of Palouse, Washington, on September 14, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Demand was killed while on patrol in Mosul, Iraq; he was in charge of seven men, and used his body to shield the civilian translator traveling with them; six of the seven men were injured in the surprise attack; he went to Iraq in January 2004 with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division from Ft. Lewis, Washington, and was scheduled to return in October 2004; during his career in the Army, he also served in Saudi Arabia and Korea; and

WHEREAS, He was born September 9, 1975, in San Diego, California, and was a 1995 graduate of Garfield-Palouse High School; he had tested himself in school sports - football, basketball, baseball - and loved hunting and fishing; he joined the Army two weeks after graduating from high school; and

WHEREAS, He was a dedicated and committed soldier who was well-liked and respected by his soldiers and by his fellow leaders; he carried out his duties with pride and confidence and he gave his life trying to keep other people safe; he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and three Good Conduct medals for service and leadership abilities; and

WHEREAS, He is survived by his parents, Bruce and Char Baldwin, and three children, a daughter, Reanne, and sons, Josh and Seth; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor Army Sgt. Jacob Henry Demand for his commitment, dedication, and sacrifice in the service of his family, community, and country; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we pray for the safety and well-being of his fellow service members as they continue to stand in harm's way in service in Iraq and around the world; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
