HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to honor citizens of the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen will be leaving the Board of Commissioners of Cook County in December 2006, after representing the Northwest suburban area for over thirty-two years; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen has faithfully served the County of Cook during his tenure, working tirelessly towards good government; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen grew up in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood during the Depression, and in 1944 he joined the United States Army, where he rose to the status of 2nd Lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen worked under General Dwight Eisenhower, and was stationed in Germany where he served as Summary Court Judge for the U.S. Military Government, which is where he met his wife, Christl; and

WHEREAS, Upon his return to Chicago with his bride in 1952, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen earned his MBA at the University of Chicago and started his own business; and

WHEREAS, In 1970, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen's career on the Board of Commissioners began when he was appointed to fill a vacancy created when a suburban representative died, and he was elected to the Board in 1974, and was re-elected for seven subsequent terms in office; and

WHEREAS, During his time on the Board of Commissioners, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen was the successful sponsor of significant and consequential legislation that affected citizens in the entire county; and

WHEREAS, The legislation included a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Carl R. Hansen, in which the Board voted to ban sanitary landfills in the Cook County Forest Preserves, which stopped the loss of at least six hundred acres of Preserve property; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen's tenacity and determination, combined with his skills as a statesman, made him a formidable opponent in debates; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Carl R. Hansen's departure from the Board will leave a void that will likely remain unfilled, as he was a font of historical information and was considered to be the "watch dog" during the County's budget process; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we extend our best wishes to Commissioner Carl R. Hansen, an exceptional governmental leader, on the occasion of his retirement; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Commissioner Carl R. Hansen in honor of the outstanding achievements he has made to Cook County Government.
