HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The Village of Lisle is celebrating 50 years of
3 incorporation in 2006; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Migrants from New England, New York,
5 Pennsylvania, and Ohio began arriving in 1832; James and Luther
6 Hatch, two brothers, settled in the area after the Blackhawk
7 War to began the farming community; in 1835, Alonzo B.
8 Chatfield suggested naming the area for Lisle, New York; and in
9 the 1840s, several German-speaking farmers from the Alsace
10 region of France settled in Lisle; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Lisle township is the oldest settlement in DuPage
12 County; and
 
13     WHEREAS, The trains first came through Lisle in 1863 when
14 the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad finished the tracks
15 between Chicago and Aurora; fire destroyed the first depot, but
16 it was rebuilt in 1874; today the depot, the Beaubien Tavern,
17 and other historic buildings from the past are located in the
18 Lisle Station Park museum complex; and
 
19     WHEREAS, In 1901, St. Procopius College and Academy, now
20 known separately as Benedictine University and Benet Academy,
21 relocated from Chicago and moved to Lisle; in 1922, Joy Morton,
22 founder of the Morton Salt Company, formally established an
23 arboretum for scientific research in horticulture and
24 agriculture at the northern edge of the city; today the Morton
25 Arboretum draws over 300,000 visitors to the community each
26 year and has given it the nickname "Arboretum Village"; and
 
27     WHEREAS, On June 23, 1956, the incorporation issue was
28 brought before voters and was approved with 606 citizens voting
29 for the incorporation of Lisle into a Village; the crossing of
30 new expressways, Interstates 88 and 355, at Lisle increased its

1 attractiveness as a residential site for Chicago's commuting
2 population; between 1970 and 1980, the village's population
3 increased from 5,329 to 13,625, and, by 2000, Lisle had 21,182
4 residents; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Today Lisle is the home to many national
6 companies; its office parks and technological centers are all
7 state-of-the-art; the Illinois Research and Development
8 Corridor, a stretch of I-88 designated for high-tech companies,
9 includes Lisle, and is located along I-88 and Warrenville Road;
10 and
 
11     WHEREAS, In 1994, Lisle's great location and its
12 spectacular hotels helped rank the village as the third most
13 popular meeting site in Illinois, following only Chicago and
14 Springfield; Lisle is home to top-rated schools and a large
15 community park system; the downtown area is thriving and the
16 people of Lisle are proud of the area they call home; and
 
17     WHEREAS, The community celebrated its anniversary of
18 incorporation starting in February of 2006 with the Lisle Area
19 Chamber of Commerce dinner dance and continued with Nostalgia
20 Days throughout the summer; the celebration ended in September
21 with a large community parade; therefore, be it
 
22     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
23 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
24 we congratulate the people of the Village of Lisle on this
25 landmark date in their rich history; and be it further
 
26     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
27 presented to the Mayor of the Village of Lisle.
