| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 |
| Representatives are honored to recognize the milestones of the | 4 |
| communities in the State of Illinois; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The Village of Durand is celebrating its | 6 |
| sesquicentennial anniversary this year, with the theme of the | 7 |
| celebration being "Traveling Through Time"; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, The Village of Durand has had an interesting | 9 |
| history; it was first settled in the fall of 1835, when Nelson | 10 |
| Salisbury and Harvey Lowe came from LaPorte Indiana and staked | 11 |
| claims in what later became sections 31, 32, and 34 of Durand | 12 |
| Township; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, In 1837, Heman Campbell, George and John | 14 |
| Pettingill, Elijah and George Felts, George Cochran, John and | 15 |
| B. Phillip, John A. Johnson, Stephen Reese, A. Cram, John H. | 16 |
| Fleming, Charles M. Franklin, John and P. Mann, Dennis Brach, | 17 |
| and George A. Fritz, Sr. all came to the area; the first | 18 |
| Methodist class was organized that same year and the first | 19 |
| Methodist sermon was preached by Rev. Whitford in the home of | 20 |
| Scott Robb; and

| WHEREAS, The first merchant, John Davies, settled in Durand | 22 |
| in 1847; and by 1857, the business directory of the town listed | 23 |
| 500 inhabitants and 100 families; and
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, Many residents of Durand have also served their | 25 |
| country; the town boasts two monuments for veterans; the first | 26 |
| monument was dedicated on September 22, 1920 and carries the | 27 |
| names of those who enlisted from Durand and Laona townships in | 28 |
| the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I; and the | 29 |
| second monument was dedicated in 1997 for those who served in | 30 |
| World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Panama, and |

| Lebanon-Grenada; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 3 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 4 |
| that we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Durand on | 5 |
| its 150th anniversary and wish them and their town many more | 6 |
| years of success; and be it further
| 7 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 8 |
| presented to President of the Village of Durand.
