HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The People of the Mountains and their descendants
3 can legitimately claim their Cherokee ancestry and heritage in
4 all capacities, both public and private; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
7 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we support the People of the
8 Mountains in their efforts to become a federally-recognized
9 Cherokee Tribe; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That we support the efforts of the People of the
11 Mountains to be allowed free access once each year to the Trail
12 of Tears State Forest, including camp sites, to honor their
13 ancestors who died there; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That we support the efforts of the People of the
15 Mountains to be allowed free access once each year during the
16 third weekend in May to Pere Marquette State Park, including
17 camp sites, in order to have the opportunity to view the sacred
18 bald eagle in Illinois; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That we support the efforts of the People of the
20 Mountains to be permitted to possess sacred items, such as
21 eagle feathers, hawk feathers, and turtle rattles, so long as
22 they are acquired without harming the animals that are the
23 sources of those items.
