AN ACT in relation to transportation.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding Section 12-807.3 as follows:

(625 ILCS 5/12-807.3 new)

Sec. 12-807.3. Bus seat safety belts; rooftop safety hatch.

(a) No person shall operate any Type I or Type II school bus manufactured after the effective date of this amendatory Act of the 93rd General Assembly unless a set of seat safety belts in good operating condition is available to each passenger and the school bus is equipped with a rooftop safety hatch. The belts and belt anchorages shall conform to the equipment requirements of this Article VIII.

(b) This Section does not apply to a school bus legally registered in another state and displaying valid registration plates of that state if the bus is not operated in Illinois on a regular basis and if the bus is being operated in Illinois in connection with the cultural, tourist, athletic, or similar activities of persons enrolled as students in a school or schools located outside of Illinois.

Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon becoming law.
