HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Illinois Reads was introduced by the Illinois
3Reading Council in March 2013; this annual, statewide project
4promotes reading for all Illinois citizens and is the State's
5largest reading encouragement program; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Each year, Illinois Reads recommends six books in
7six different age categories, ranging from infant to adult, and
8written by authors with ties to Illinois; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Illinois Reads focuses on reading at home and in
10the classroom; the program also emphasizes summer reading as a
11way to not only bring the family closer together but to also
12combat what is known as "summer learning loss" in children; and
 
13    WHEREAS, As part of Illinois Reads, classrooms, public and
14school libraries, community groups, and community bookstores
15throughout the State will feature the titles of 36 books in the
16six separate age groupings; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Illinois Reads is sponsored by the Illinois
18Reading Council, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to
19provide support and leadership to all who promote and teach
20lifelong literacy; the program works with the Illinois State
21Library, and State Librarian Jesse White is the Honorary Chair;

2    WHEREAS, The 2019 Illinois Reads Book Festival will take
3place on Saturday, March 16, at the Brookside Campus of
4Waukegan High School; the culmination is a statewide
5celebration of literacy during Secretary White's Family
6Reading Night in November; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate the Illinois Reads program on its six years of
10success, and we support the goals of the program; we urge
11citizens throughout the State to become involved as Illinois
12Reads Ambassadors and to support efforts to promote literacy;
13and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the Illinois Reading Council.
