SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/27-23.15 new

    Amends the School Code to require a school district to provide instruction to and a student enrolled in grades 6 through 8 to take a unit of instruction in family and consumer science. Sets forth what topics the instruction must include. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
527-23.15 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/27-23.15 new)
7    Sec. 27-23.15. Family and consumer science. Beginning with
8the 2020-2021 school year, each school district that maintains
9grades 6 through 8 must include in its curriculum and require
10all students in grades 6 through 8 to take a unit of
11instruction on family and consumer science that includes, but
12is not limited to, instruction on financial literacy, wellness,
13personal hygiene, food preparation, nutrition, and emotional
14intelligence. Instruction on a subject may be omitted from this
15unit of instruction if the subject is incorporated in another
16required course. The school board shall determine the minimum
17amount of instructional time that qualifies as a unit of
18instruction satisfying the requirements of this Section.
 
19    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
20becoming law.
