SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were very saddened to learn of the tragic death of Kevin McCann
4 of Park Ridge on September 4, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Following a brawl at a tailgate party on the
6 campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North
7 Carolina, Brett Harman, Kevin's best friend since childhood,
8 was mortally wounded, and Kevin, in defense of his friend,
9 immediately jumped to tackle the shooter, and was shot and
10 killed; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Kevin McCann and Brett Harman grew up together and
12 were top wrestlers for their high schools; Brett, a U.S.
13 Marine, was stationed in North Carolina and was scheduled to be
14 deployed to Iraq in January; Kevin and other friends had
15 traveled from Chicago to visit Brett over the Labor Day
16 weekend; it was said that neither boy had a serious bone in
17 their bodies, and that they were such happy-go-lucky kids; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Kevin graduated from Notre Dame High School in
19 Niles in 1999; he was a captain of the varsity wrestling team,
20 an All-Conference wrestler, a conference, regional, and
21 sectional wrestling champion, and a starting player on the
22 varsity football team; and
 
23     WHEREAS, Kevin went on to graduate from the University of
24 Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he majored in business and was a
25 three-year varsity letterman in wrestling; in both the
26 classroom and in competition, he continued to earn the respect
27 and admiration of friends and teammates who shared the opinion
28 that Kevin was an outstanding individual; and
 
29     WHEREAS, He recently began a career as an insurance broker,
30 working as an account executive at Mesirow Financial in

1 Chicago; in the brief time he was there, his co-workers
2 recognized that Kevin was an individual of rare confidence and
3 competence; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Kevin was a young man of remarkable ability,
5 impressive accomplishment, and exceptional potential; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The passing of Kevin McCann will be deeply felt by
7 many, especially his parents, Jane and Dennis McCann; his
8 brother Terry (Eileen) McCann; and many other relatives,
9 friends, and former coaches and teammates; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
12 Kevin McCann along with all who knew and loved him and extend
13 our sincerest condolences to his family and friends; and be it
14 further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
17 sympathy.
