SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were very saddened to learn of the tragic death of 2nd
4 Lieutenant Brett J. Harman, U.S.M.C., of Park Ridge on
5 September 4, 2004; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Harman and his best friend, Kevin
7 McCann of Park Ridge, died in a shooting incident following a
8 brawl at a tailgate party on the campus of North Carolina State
9 University; Brett was mortally wounded defending Kevin; in
10 response, Kevin tackled the shooter and was shot and killed;
11 and
 
12     WHEREAS, Brett and Kevin had been friends since childhood
13 and top wrestlers for their high schools; Brett was stationed
14 in North Carolina and was getting ready for deployment to Iraq
15 in January, and Kevin and a half-dozen other pals had traveled
16 from Chicago to spend the long holiday weekend with him; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Brett graduated from Maine South High School in
18 1999, where he played football and was a varsity wrestler,
19 ranked in the top ten nationally in his division; he was also
20 the captain of the Maine South High School wrestling squad for
21 two years; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Harman joined the U.S. Marine Corps in
23 May of 2003 after graduating from the Naval Academy, which he
24 attended on a full wrestling scholarship; he was a second
25 lieutenant with the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, and was
26 stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Harman was greatly admired and
28 respected by friends, by former teammates, opponents, and
29 coaches, and by the Marines in his platoon; he will be
30 remembered as a born leader who had a naturally positive

1 outlook on life; and
 
2     WHEREAS, The passing of Lieutenant Harman has been deeply
3 felt by many, especially his parents, Nancy J. (Terry) Tighe
4 and Thomas Harman; his brother, Robert W.; his grandparents,
5 Robert and Barbara Johnson; his aunts and uncles, Jeffrey
6 (Ann), Barbara, and Roberta Johnson; and his nephew, Jack
7 Tiebout; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10 Lieutenant Brett J. Harman, U.S.M.C., who was taken from this
11 life too soon, and we extend our sincerest condolences to his
12 family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
13 further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
16 sympathy.
