SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Joseph Allen Murphey of Princeton on Friday, August 20, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Murphey was born on July 9, 1915 in Crete, Nebraska to Joseph Allen and Mabel (Dutch) Murphey; he married Winnifred Coward on July 24, 1944 in Portland, Oregon; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Murphey graduated from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to be a chemist; and

WHEREAS, He valiantly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Murphey returned after the war to the family business, Hoffman's Jewelry, which was located next to the Clark Hotel; he bought the business and started Patterns of the Past, a matching service for china, silverware, and crystal, while also running the jewelry store; he and his wife owned and operated Hoffman's Patterns of the Past for more than 50 years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Murphey was a member of the Lions Club for more than 50 years and was a member of Princeton Moose Lodge 1339 and Princeton American Legion; and

WHEREAS, His passing has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Winnifred; his sons, Patrick Allen Murphey and Scott R. (Meg) Murphey; his daughters, Jelinda F. (Richard) Morse and Susan Jane (Claude) Rasmussen; his grandson, Bryan E. (Genna) Lorenzana; and his nieces, Allyn Sitterly and Mary Beastall; he was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Judith Ann Murphey; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of John Allen Murphey, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mr. Murphey as an expression of our sincerest condolences.
