SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with sadness of the death of Kenneth A. Whitney of
4 Evanston on Friday, June 4, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Whitney received a bachelor's degree from
6 Howard University in Washington, D.C.; on June 28, 1969, he
7 married Eleanor Sloan, whom he met while at Howard; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Mr. Whitney received his law degree from
9 Northwestern University's School of Law in 1972; he began his
10 legal career at the law firm of Jenner and Block; he
11 subsequently served as chief counsel for the Department of
12 General Services for the State of Illinois during Governor Dan
13 Walker's administration; and
 
14     WHEREAS, For 23 years, Mr. Whitney served as in-house legal
15 counsel for Motorola Inc. in Schaumburg, where he retired as a
16 senior attorney in 2000; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Devoted to a life of service, enrichment, and
18 empowerment, Mr. Whitney served on various boards and
19 organizations in the Evanston community, where he was
20 recognized often for his contributions; he served on the
21 District 65 School Board from 1991 until 1995, also serving for
22 a time as its president; during his tenure on the board, he
23 took a strong stand for quality education in racially balanced
24 settings; and
 
25     WHEREAS, In December of 1992, Mr. Whitney and his
26 colleagues reaffirmed the district's long-standing policy on
27 racial balancing in the schools; the vote was aimed at putting
28 to rest an argument from parents calling for the loosening of
29 the district's desegregation policy in the interest of
30 maintaining neighborhood schools; and

1     WHEREAS, Genealogical research was one of Mr. Whitney's
2 passions, and he left a rich historical legacy for his family;
3 he also inspired and guided others in their efforts to research
4 their family history; he was a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha
5 Psi Fraternity Inc. and was active for many years in the
6 Evanston alumni chapter; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The passing of Kenneth A. Whitney has been deeply
8 felt by many, especially his wife, Eleanor; his sons Ryan and
9 Scott; his mother, Lurnetta Whitney; his brothers Timothy
10 (Jan), John (Elizabeth), and Thomas (Marion); his sister
11 Barbara Penn; and his many nieces, nephews and other relatives;
12 therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15 Kenneth A. Whitney, and we extend our sincere condolences to
16 his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
17 further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Kenneth A. Whitney as an expression
20 of our deepest sympathy.
